The influence of classical Chinese philosophy on the national music of China in the 1980s

Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the interrelations between fundamental values in Chinese philosophy (Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism) and their reflection in the piano music of China during the 1980s. The study is novel in that it is the first one to analyze piano compositions from the period under consideration focusing on the relationship between classical philosophical principles and musical art. As a result, the article demonstrates, using specific examples of piano music from the 1980s, how traditional concepts of Chinese philosophy (unity with nature, social justice, inner harmony, respect for elders) are reflected in musical form.
