Emancipation of Horror as a Phenomenon of Modern Philosophical Culture

Abstract. The article considers the phenomenon of horror emancipation, which became possible due to autonomization of the ugly. This process takes place within the framework of the fundamental anthropological turn in modern philosophy and culture. It is shown that in modern culture, horror became omnipresent, asserting itself as an important component of reality. In this context, a new opposition is revealed - meaning/horror - that replaced the previous one: fear/horror. This, on the one hand, clarifies the modern situation of semantic vacuum and, on the other hand, explains great interest for the horror genre, which came out as a generator of new meanings for the mass society.
