The Arabic-Language Epistolary Sources of the XIX - Early XX Century: History of Studying and Thematic Description (Based on Materials of the Oriental Manuscripts Fund)

Abstract. The research objective includes analysing the Dagestanian epistolary heritage of the XIX - early XX century as a historical source. The article provides a survey of the Dagestanian epistolary sources, presents their thematic description, summarizes previous studies in this research area. Scientific originality of the paper lies in the fact that the authors for the first time present a thematic description of a wide range of the Arabic-language epistolary sources, which have not been previously investigated. The research findings are as follows: the authors identify the basic thematic groups of the letters and justify the thesis that studying epistolary heritage makes it possible to reconstruct everyday life, personal relations of Dagestan peoples and to clarify certain aspects of social life in Dagestan in the XIX - early XX century.
