Foreign language education in the formation of students’ civic identity in the Russian pre-revolutionary gymnasium of the 19th and the early 20th century

Abstract. The research aims to actualise the experience of foreign language education in the formation of students’ civic identity in the Russian gymnasium of the 19th and the early 20th century from the historical and axiological perspective. Taking into account the principle of historical and temporal correction, the author correlates the conceptual fields of basic research terms and considers axiology from the state, stratum, educational and personal standpoints. On the basis of the modern terminological apparatus and taking into account the regulatory requirements for the implementation of the principle of historical and temporal correction, the paper presents the experience of civic identity formation in the pre-revolutionary Russian gymnasium in the “Foreign language” subject. The scientific novelty lies in identifying the value orientations relevant to the current educational situation: foreign language education in its axiological aspect, exposure to the works of world literature in the original, in-depth reading as the basis of reading literacy, which will help to organise the process of civic identity formation in a modern mainstream school on the basis of the best retrospective practices. The research findings amount to comprehending and analysing the process of civic identity formation by means of a foreign language in the 19th and the early 20th century in order to improve civic identity formation within the framework of foreign language education at the modern mainstream school.
