Russian Language and Literature at Short-Term Teacher Courses (Late XIX - Early XX Century)

Abstract. The purpose of the research is to find ways to optimise the system of further training for Language and Literature teachers. The paper examines the experience of such work carried out in the late XIX - early XX century, i.e. the organisation of short-term teacher courses. The author pays special attention to the place that Russian Language and Literature occupied at these courses, outlines the prospects of us-ing the progressive pedagogical experience of the past in the present. Scientific novelty of the research lies in introducing into scientific use materials that have been relatively 13 to a wide range of researchers previously and not only reflect the experience of organising courses and contain its social-political assessment, but are also of theoretical and practical value for the organisation of a modern system of further training for teachers. The research findings show that the organisation of the process of Russian Language and Literature teaching at the courses was constantly improved and was aimed not only at solving utilitarian practical tasks, but also contributed to teachers’ moral and aesthetic development.
