Formative Assessment as a Technique to Develop Schoolchildren’s Educational Autonomy

Abstract. The article discusses conceptual principles and a didactic potential of alternative assessment, in particular, formative assessment aimed to develop learners’ educational autonomy. Advantages and shortcomings of summative and formative approaches to assessment are identified. Foreign and domestic methodologies to develop learners’ educational autonomy are compared. The experiment results testify the efficiency of the formative assessment technique in achieving meta-subject results at secondary school Biology lessons.
