CULTURE OF GIFTS AS A REFLECTION OF THE JAPANESE’S ETHNO-CULTURAL IDENTITY

Abstract. The article deals with culture of gifts in Japan as a historically established ritual act. No significant event in the Japanese’s life occurs without gifts that are presented not only as a greeting, but also as a sign of acknowledgment, apology or sympathy. Particular attention is paid to omens and superstitions, associations related to gifts. Knowledge of national specificity of this ancient tradition contributes to successful implementation of cross-cultural communication taking into account difference of cultures and thinking stereotypes.
