Abstract. A careful examination of the evolution of the most important concepts: sacral, sacred, law, sovereign, ritual , testifies to the absence of their universal understanding. The forms and practices of religious life have changed their names and become integral attributes of the modern state-legal system. The phenomenon of sacralization and desacralization of objects of the surrounding reality is investigated with the use of a linguistic analysis of legal and religious texts. The mechanisms for the attribution of sacredness to legal texts and state institutions, such as judges and presidents, are described. The models of reproduction and maintenance of sacred texts and social institutions by features of human consciousness and social practices are explained. The considered examples point to the transition of sacredness from Holy Scripture to secular texts, such as the Constitution. The swearing-in of the first persons in the state replaces the ritual of coronation; the Defender of the Faith becomes the Guarantor of the Constitution. The work traces the evolution of elements of sacredness from primitive societies to highly developed information societies of the postindustrial world that have the goal of social regulation of the society.
