Abstract. The article analyzes sonata op. 25 № 4 for alto and piano by Paul Hindemith, which is examined in the context of the stylistic evolution of the composer’s creative work of the 1920s. The authors introduce their own interpretation of the esthetic and philosophical conception of this composition representing the complicated and contradictive reality of the time full of shocking experiments, denial of the past and at the same time longing for the lost harmony. The chosen aspect of musicological analysis is considered particularly relevant for the performers appealing for sonata op. 25 № 4.
