ICONOGRAPHY OF SERGIUS OF RADONEZH IN ICON-PAINTING OF THE RUSSIAN NORTH: SPECIFICITY OF THE IMAGE AND ARTISTIC HIEROTOPY

Abstract. The article deals with the embodiment of the image of Sergius of Radonezh in the icon-painting of the Russian North. The purpose of the paper is to prove by the example of iconography that in the North works and ideas important on timeless scale are accumulated and diffused. The term "artistic hierotopy" is introduced. The author concludes that the icon-painting patterns emphasize the importance of St. Sergius in several spiritual and historical aspects, allow judging about the syncretic essence of his activity and teaching and they are a part of an integral spiritual system that reflects national self-consciousness.
