Abstract. The article reveals the basic features typical of consumer society, touches on the negativity of this phenomenon, identifies what aspects of human life it covers. The paper analyzes different historical and philosophical conceptions of "consumer society". According to the author, consumption in its essence is a "barbarism" modus. The modus is interpreted as one of the forms of barbarism. The researcher emphasizes the duality of the phenomenon of barbarism as a negative phenomenon, which opposes culture and simultaneously is originated by culture itself.
