THE RUSSIAN HISTORIANS OF THE XIX - THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY ABOUT THE COSSACKS’ PARTICIPATION IN THE TIME OF TROUBLES

Abstract. The article analyzes the main theses of the pre-revolutionary classics of historical science on the participation of the Cossacks in the Time of Troubles. It is shown that there were no special works on this subject, but prominent historians covered its separate aspects: the role of the Cossacks in the Time of Troubles, the degree of their influence, the reasons of supporting the impostors, and then - the candidacy of Mikhail Fedorovich to the throne, the role of the Don Cossacks in the accession of the Romanovs to the throne, and the consequences of the Time of Troubles for the Cossacks. The conclusions are made about the achievements and unsolved problems of historiography.
