ESCHATOLOGICAL PLOTS IN MONUMENTAL CHURCH PAINTING AT THE TURN OF THE XIX-XX CENTURIES

Abstract. The article analyzes the features of the plots of one of the most symbolic themes in the monumental church painting of the era of modernity - the theme of Apocalypse. The compositions mentioned in the paper are studied for the first time. The author concludes that at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries a wide range of stories existed in church paintings that illustrated the Revelation, creating which the artists turned to both early and late iconography. The basis of the study is comprehensive approach to the research of church paintings by art history methods.
