Abstract. The article analyzes significant differences between the antique and the Christian ideas about suffering in their relation to the fundamental traits of the antique and the Christian worldviews. If for a man of the antique culture suffering is associated with the action of blind fate, the Christian subject considers suffering as Divine Providence, thereby suffering is placed in the context of soteriological problematic. Accordingly, the antique strategy of "suffering denial" is replaced in the Christian thought by willingness to tolerate it in the perspective of salvation and deification.
