Abstract. The article analyzes myth as an indispensable element of human culture throughout the history. The authors reveal the functions and role that myths perform in contemporary society, their timeless and universal nature. The formation of the myths of mass consciousness by media for the manipulation of public opinion is shown. Being a means to control mass consciousness myth can carry both constructive and destructive social effects.
