Abstract. The article considers the views of Alexei Ivanovich Vvedensky on the functions and tasks of education in spiritual and academic institutions. The contribution of the scientist to the formation of the educational process of Moscow Theological Academy, his pedagogical attitudes are shown. The approach of A. Vvedensky to the educational value of academic teaching of philosophy was based on teaching students to think; he understood the teacher’s role more as a subsidiary one, only introducing into science.
