Abstract. The authors of modern art researches exaggerate the methodological significance of post-modernist principles and conceptions. As a result absolutely different types of elite and mass music are labeled as post-modernistic. The author of the article moderately criticizes the opinions of the researchers interpreting the creative work of the composers А. Berg, R. Graettinger, D. Ellington in post-modernistic perspective. R. Shleifer’s theories are independently considered, who analyzes the American mass song of 1930-1940 from the position of its belonging to modernist art.
