Abstract. Searches for ideal varnish have been carried out from the moment of the origin of painting. In the article the authors consider the brief history of applying varnishes, requirements for varnishes, issues and problems related to covering the modern painting with varnish. Relying on the scientific investigations of the English and French restorers and their own experience in this sphere the authors introduce methodical recommendations on the choice and application of varnish. The paper summarizes the uncoordinated experience of previous researchers and presents useful practical information for restorers, painters and art critics.
