Abstract. The authors, basing on the analysis of the existing versions, involving newly discovered historical evidence, come to the conclusion about the groundlessness of the widespread assumptions about the Polish origin of the Russian third pitch seven-stringed guitar, and prove that M. A. Stakhovich’s version with M. I. Pylyaev’s elaborations, according to which A. O. Sikhra invented the Russian seven-stringed guitar in 1793, should be adopted as the leading scientific hypothesis.
