HINT PRINCIPLE USE IN EGYPTIAN SCULPTURE OF OLD KINGDOM

Kulikov Fedor Ivanovich
Gorny Altai State University

Abstract. The object of the research is the decoration of the Egyptian tombs of Old Kingdom. The aim is to determine the purpose of the so-called Pharaoh’s cylinders in the composition of private and royal sculptures. By the comparative analysis of the iconography of the sculptural and relief images of the tomb host the author for the first time proves that the appearance of cylinders in nobles’ hands is the consequence of hint principle application by the Egyptian master, explains their use by technical problems: the sculptor had to show the entire attributive set in hands but not to the detriment of his work strength; and finds out that cylinders in hands not only hinted at the presence of necessary attributes (staff, warder, lotus or shawl) but also generated them.
Key words and phrases: древний Египет, Старое царство, египетская гробница: египетская скульптура, "цилиндры фараона", ancient Egypt, Old Kingdom, Egyptian tomb, Egyptian sculpture, Pharaoh’s cylinders
