Abstract. The author reveals the significance of Blessed Augustine's aesthetic-theological works for icon painting art formation in the early centuries of Christianity, disproves Plotinus's predominant role in this process, whose works are traditionally the basis of art criticism science, pays special attention to the differences between Blessed Augustine and Plotinus's views on art fundamental questions and shows how these differences affect the aesthetic-theological understanding of the art of icon.
