Communicative dissonance in “The Paris Dictionary of Muscovites” (1586)

Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the causes and methods of representing communicative dissonance in “The Paris Dictionary of Muscovites” (1586). The article provides a characterization of “The Paris Dictionary of Muscovites”, the first French-Russian phrasebook compiled by the French during the summer fair of 1586 in Arkhangelsk and published in Paris at the end of the same year. The study examines the reasons for the emergence of communicative dissonance between communication participants and its manifestations, as recorded in this linguistic monument of the late 16th century. The scientific novelty of the research lies in considering one of the striking features of this phrasebook, i.e., communicative dissonance, reflecting different strategies of interlocutors and different registers of communication in French and Russian. The obtained results show how this unique linguistic monument records the features of two different, in nature, communicative practices that developed in Russia and France in the late 16th century.
