Linguistic realization of implicit meanings in “A Story of Love” by R. Bradbury (based on the English language)

Abstract. The study aims to identify linguistic means for the realization of implicit meanings in R. Bradbury’s short story “A Story of Love”. The article discusses implicitness as a concept and analyzes how it manifests itself in English-language fiction. Additionally, the study presents reasons for the lack of emphasis on seeking implicit meanings in literary works, attributing this to readers’ focus on surface-level, obvious ideas and meanings. By highlighting the linguistic devices employed by the author, the study delves into the philosophical issues of the text. The scientific novelty lies in its first-time analysis of the English text of R. Bradbury’s “A Story of Love”, utilizing lexical units to unveil the implicit meaning of the categories of Life and Death behind the main characters’ images. The study found that implicit meanings are embedded in lexical units used to describe the main characters (“green”, “bright”, “summer”, etc. – for the female character; “autumn”, “October”, “chess”, etc. – for the male character). Definitions of these lexical units revealed semantic references to concepts such as “birth”, “life”, “fading”, “death”, “balance”, etc., allowing for the identification of “implicit characters” – Life and Death, and an implicit meaning – the wholeness of Being.
