Abstract. The study aims to describe diminutive words in the word family with the base word “старый” (old) involving data from the Russian National Corpus. The study also presents English equivalents to the diminutives identified in the word family with the base word “старый”. Such a study shows how different linguistic cultures use diminutive forms to convey emotional nuances. In English, for example, it is not always possible to find a direct analogue to Russian diminutives, often additional words or phrases are required to convey similar meanings. This highlights the uniqueness of the Russian language and its ability to convey complex emotional states through word formation. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the diminutives from the word “старый” are considered in the context of its word family involving data from the Russian National Corpus. The results of the study show that, despite the low frequency of use, these words play a significant role in colloquial speech and literature, enriching the language with expressive means. Understanding and proper use of diminutives can significantly enrich communication skills, as well as intensify understanding of the cultural and emotional aspects associated with the use of language. In conclusion, this study not only reveals the specifics of the use of diminutives in the Russian language, but also opens up new opportunities for further study of linguistic phenomena and their cultural contexts.
