Abstract. The study aims to determine the role of the connotative component in the structure of the meaning of a word when creating a humorous effect in an utterance. The paper examines the causes of a humorous effect: the author assigns the leading role in its creation to the connotative component in the structure of the meaning of a word, provided that it is actualized by the contextual space. The study is novel in that it is the first to consider the connotative component in the structure of the meaning of a word as a necessary condition for creating a humorous effect in an utterance. As a result, it has been determined that the foregrounding of the connotative component in the structure of the meaning of a word, which has taken root in society, having become a stereotype, provided it is actualized by the contextual space, allows achieving a humorous effect and impress the addressee, therefore, the connotative component of lexical units affects the occurrence of a humorous effect in an utterance.
