Structural and compositional features of parallel fragments in Du Fu’s poems “Night in the Chambers” and “I Heard That the Imperial Troops Had Returned the Territories Located North and South of the Yellow River”

Abstract. The paper studies parallelism in Du Fu’s poems “Night in the Chambers” and “I Heard That the Imperial Troops Had Returned the Territories Located North and South of the Yellow River”. The aim of the research is to identify the structural and compositional features characteristic of parallel fragments in these works. The research is novel in that it is the first to determine the ratio of fragments parallel in the vertical and horizontal directions in the works. The research findings showed that both poems contain parallel fragments with vertical and horizontal symmetry. At the same time, vertical symmetry prevails. As for the first of the aforementioned poems, parallel fragments with horizontal symmetry make up 42.9%, while those with vertical symmetry make up 78.6%. In the second work, the same values amount to 35.7% and 75%, respectively. The compositional features of parallel fragments in the poem “Night in the Chambers” consist in the use of anaphora and epiphora. In the second poem, the lines are connected in pairs through vertical symmetry.
