Comparison as a means of linguistic representation of the image of the country (based on the material of W. Koeppen’s work “Nach Russland und anderswohin”)

Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the main functions of comparative constructions involved in linguistic representation of the image of the country in Wolfgang Koeppen’s travel notes “Nach Russland und anderswohin” (“To Russia and Elsewhere”). The paper discusses various approaches to the classification of comparisons that have developed today in linguistics, determines their role in the structure of texts belonging to different styles. The analysis of comparative constructions found in the first chapter of W. Koeppen’s travel notes, which is completely devoted to the description of the author’s journey through Spain, is carried out. The classification of the identified language structures by types is given, their functions significant for the representation of a “foreign” reality are investigated. The study is novel in that it is the first to consider comparison as an important element of the structure of a work related to the genre of travel notes, based on its stylistic potential realized in the process of creating the author’s image of the country. As a result of the study, the predominant types of linguistic constructions with the semantics of comparison found in W. Koeppen’s travel notes have been determined; the analysis of these constructions based on the subject of comparison has been carried out; their role in linguistic representation of the image of Spain in the middle of the XX century has been described, taking into account the author’s individual style.
