Experimental Study of Errors in Russian Vowels Pronunciation by Chinese Students

Abstract. The research aims to identify persistent typical errors of Chinese students in the pronunciation of Russian vowels. The paper analyses more than 300 experimental pronunciation materials and shows that phonetic errors are directly related to the degree of mouth opening and the tongue position. Scientific novelty of the work lies in the objective assessment of pronunciation errors and visualisation of deviations from the norm using the Praat programme. The research findings have shown that the phonetic errors of Chinese students in the pronunciation of Russian vowels mainly concern the sounds [о], [у], [ы], [э]. To rectify the errors, it is necessary to correct the degree of mouth opening and the tongue position in the process of teaching Russian as a foreign language (RFL) to Chinese students.
