Mental Modes as a Means of Manifestation of the Author’s Figure in the Structure of the Evaluative English-Language Film Review

Abstract. The purpose of the research is to determine how the mental mode is realised as a means of explication of the author’s position in the discourse of evaluative subgenres of the user and expert online English-language film review. The researcher proceeds from the notion that the ways of actualising the position of the subject are determined by the functional characteristics of the discourse. The paper considers the subject factor in the discourse, analyses the role of identifying subjective modality and describing dominant types of evaluation in the study of the author’s position in evaluative subgenres. The research is novel in that it is the first to carry out a comparative analysis of the means of expressing subjective modality, using the material of texts of evaluative English-language film reviews, which allowed the researcher to identify the particularities of structuring the evaluative judgments made by the authors of the texts under consideration, as well as to compare these subgenres with scientific and personal types of discourse. As a result, it has been found that the differences in the meanings of the mental mode and the means of naming the addresser indicate the content variability of evaluation and the methods of reasoning and convincing the recipient chosen by the authors.
