Secondary Naming in English-Language and Russian-Language Botanical Terminological Names (by the Material of Eponymic Species Names of Representatives of the Genus Agave)

Abstract. The purpose of the study is to develop a detailed thematic classification of English- language and Russian-language terminological units - names of succulent plants from the standpoint of features peculiar to naming processes, derivation and etymology. Names of houseplants require systematisation, elimination of synonymy, unification and standardisation in general. The official eponymic names of succulents that are a part of the Agavoideae subfamily of the genus Agave served as the research material. Scientific novelty of the study lies in identifying the main sources of eponymic species names of plants representing the genus. As a result, it has been proved that the models of formation of specific terminological names of agaves in English and Russian are similar, they are based not only on botanists’ personal and family names but also on that of representatives of related professions, as well as famous personalities.
