Abstract. The article aims to determine the work of such cognitive mechanisms as interactive alignment and inferencing in consecutive interpreting. The study is novel in that it is the first to consider an interpreter’s activity through the lens of cognitive mechanisms of interactive alignment and inferencing. As a result of an analysis, it was proved that cognitive mechanisms of interactive alignment and inferencing can influence such cognitive mechanisms as probabilistic forecasting and compression. It is emphasised that interactive alignment and inferencing make it possible to solve a number of pragmatic tasks faced by an interpreter.
