Abstract. The purpose of the study is to identify the structural and semantic specifics of abbreviations in the Volga Germans’ post-revolutionary press from the standpoint of a sociolinguistic approach. The paper considers the abbreviation processes from the perspective of their being conditioned by a wide range of extra- and intralinguistic factors in the setting where the Volga region variant of the German language had contact with the Russian language. Scientific novelty lies in introducing new factual material into scientific use. Abbreviations found in the press language of the Volga Germans minority ethnic group for the first time serve as a special object of research. As a result, it has been found that in the early Soviet period, the language of the majority ethnic group had a significant impact on the language of the Volga Germans’ press, in which abbreviation became a new productive way of word formation.
