Abstract. The paper aims to analyse genre-formative parameters of the patent genre and to develop its genre model. There are a number of studies on institutional discourse genre space, but the problem of the engineering discourse genre structure is still relevant and is considered a promising trend of communicative linguistics taking into account the fact that professional communication and, in particular, the engineering discourse remains insufficiently investigated. Scientific originality of the research involves analysing the patent as a genre of engineering communication. The research findings are as follows: the author identifies the basic genre characteristics of the patent and reveals specificity of their linguistic representation in the engineering discourse.
