Interpretation of Main Character’s Image in B. Disraeli’s "New English" Novel "Tancred: or, the New Crusade" in the Russian Translation of the XIX Century

Abstract. The paper considers poetics of the Russian translation of B. Disraeli’s political novel "Tancred: or, the New Crusade" executed in the second half of the XIX century. The article focuses on the problem of the main character’s image transfer when translating. Relevance of the study lies in the fact that the author discusses topical problems of receptive aesthetics, comparative literary studies and crosscultural communication. Scientific originality of the research involves introducing previously unknown linguistic material. The findings allow identifying an anonymous translator’s intention, on the one hand, to transfer artistic originality of the political novel preserving its problematics and poetics, and, on the other hand, to make it in tune with the Russian literary trends of the second half of the XIX century and to adapt the text for the general reader.
