Non-Standard Combinatorial Behaviour of the Verb ‘to do’ in Modern English

Abstract. The study aims to determine functional characteristics of word combinations exhibiting extended non-standard combinatorial behaviour of the verb ‘to do’ in the modern English language. Scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that analysing the use of non-standard word combinations with the verb ‘to do’ in the English-language communication, the author for the first time identifies the most common lexical sets and determines linguocultural functional characteristics of such word combinations. As a result, it was found that non-standard word combinations with the verb ‘to do’ are used both to amplify communication intention and to reduce it saving a communicant’s face and also as a means of distancing in word combinations related to emotional sphere.
