Abstract. The article analyzes semantic transformation of the toponym "Espa?a" in diachrony and synchrony. The paper justifies the thesis that the conception of Spain as a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural state undergoes essential transformations. Analyzing the historical and current socio-linguistic situation on the Iberian Peninsula, the authors trace how re-interpretation of the very conception "Spain" leads to semantic transformation of the corresponding linguistic unit. The findings are illustrated by the examples taken from scientific and publicistic literature and Internet sources.
