Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of adverbs reportedly and allegedly as a means of rendering someone else’s speech in the modern English-language news texts. The work aims to highlight a special type of adverbs - reporting adverbs, which are used for the indirect attribution of an utterance. Novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time an attempt is made to study adverbs reportedly and allegedly thoroughly as a means of expressing indirect evidentiality. The obtained results indicate that the adverbs under study have all the characteristics which allow distinguishing them into a separate group of the linguistic means used to convey someone else’s speech. Reporting adverbs perform an important communicative-pragmatic function in an utterance being an effective means of hedging.
Key words and phrases: наречия речевого сообщения, косвенная речь, атрибуция информации, категория эвиденциальности, лингвистическая компрессия, reporting adverbs, indirect speech, information attribution, category of evidentiality, linguistic compression
