Abstract. The presence of characters with dissociative disorder of identity and other "features" of this kind in the centre of narration is a well-known and, in all likelihood, the most characteristic feature of D. Keyes’s prose. We are interested in the linguistic aspect of the situation itself, where, throughout the narrative, the speech portrait of one and the same (conditionally) character undergoes dramatic changes. The article focuses on the identification ("recognition") of one or another character of the work through speech, as well as on translation techniques for conveying the speech portrait created by the writer. One of the probably least popular and little-studied novels of D. Keyes "The Fifth Sally" serves as the material for our study.
