RECEPTION OF L. TOLSTOY’S PERSONALITY AND CREATIVITY IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Abstract. The objective of the article is an attempt to reveal the perception of L. N. Tolstoy’s personality and his creative heritage by the Czechs throughout several epochs (the ХIХ-ХХI centuries). To implement the intended objective the paper examines Tolstoy’s connections with the Czechs and Slovaks (T. G. Masarik, D. P. Makovicky, K. Veleminsky, P. Shakvan), translations of the writer’s works into the Czech language, reviews on the thinker’s creativity by literary critics (V. Mrstik, F. Salda), feedback on the teaching activity by the writers (O. Berezina), composers (L. Jan??ek), journalists (N. V. Moravsky, R. Valencik) and the teacher (J. Mrazik). The authors come to the conclusion that despite the fact that 190 years have passed since the birth of the great Russian writer and he did not have a chance to visit the Czech Republic, interest in his personality among Czech researchers only increases.
