THE PROBLEM OF CENTRATION AND NON-SELECTION WHEN TRANSLATING THE BOOK OF PSALMS INTO JAPANESE

Abstract. The article analyzes the conflict of centration and non-selection principles as a basic difficulty when translating Biblical poetics into Japanese. The paper shows how the dominating in the Biblical poetry principle of centration influences the system of artistic expressiveness means and why it contradicts with the Japanese perception of the same tropes. The author describes the basic techniques to translate problematic tropes and possible translation mistakes, provides the examples of Psalmic phraseology representing the principle of centration and identifies the influence of this opposition on the efficient transfer of source text meanings.
