Abstract. The article reveals the notion of the world language in its difference from the global language - the terms that have become widespread in sociolinguistics in the era of globalization. An attempt is made to consider how, in the case of the English and Russian languages, their unifying function is changing, which is immanent in every living language and in the world language in particular. The authors consider modern conceptions of sociolinguistics with respect to the description of the language status, emphasizing the analysis of the situation of communicative conflict in the case of non-coincidence of the choice of a language between the interlocutors.
