Abstract. The article deals with some peculiarities of the artistic world of V. M. Golovnin’s book "Memoirs of a Captivity in Japan during the Years 1811, 1812 and 1813 with Observations on the Country and the People", published in 1816. This novel is a fascinating monument of the Russian literature of the first decades of the XIX century. In the work, the author analyses the episodes with the "food theme", they are of interest in the historical and cultural aspect as the representation of the first cultural contacts between Russia and Japan, as well as the embodiment of realistic (ethnographic) narration traits and the combination of the elements of realism and romanticism in literature.
