TRADITION OF THE BANGSAWAN THEATRE AND ARTISTIC PECULIARITIES OF THE MALAYSIAN DRAMATURGY OF THE MIDDLE OF THE XX CENTURY (BY THE MATERIAL OF SHAHAROM HUSAIN’S PLAYS)

Abstract. The paper reveals the transitory nature of the early Malay dramaturgy of the 1950-1960s with special reference to the writing of Shaharom Husain, one of the most outstanding authors of that time. The analysis demonstrates the persisting influence of the urban theatrical form bangsawan and the artistic principles of realistic drama co-existing in his plays. Ambivalence of focus in Shaharom’s writing brought into life two strikingly different works based on almost identical story line. His dramaturgy reflects complex interplay of tradition and novelty typical of the Malaysian literature of the time that witnessed the increasing dominance of the author’s individuality.
