Abstract. The article considers the development of the expansion skill from the point of view of consecutive interpretation. The problem of developing the skill is reflected in numerous works on teaching foreign languages, but has not been considered in the framework of the development of the skills related to the use of a specific translation technique. The aim of the study is to identify by which linguistic means expansion is achieved in interpretation. Expansion in interpretation is characterized by the presence of additional units that are divided into 2 main groups: 1) additional units, which are the result of logical reasoning, 2) additional units, which are used to gain time and are associated with oral speech organization.
