ON TRADITIONAL OPPOSITION OF YAMANOTE AND SHITAMACHI DISTRICTS IN THE SOCIAL AND LINGUISTIC LIFE OF EDO AND TOKYO

Abstract. The article is devoted to analyzing the role of Yamanote and Shitamachi districts in the life of Edo and Tokyo community in general and in the process of formation and functioning of Tokyo dialect in particular. Having analyzed Yamanote and Shitamachi districts from the historical, geographical and linguistic viewpoints the author shows how their interaction stimulated Tokyo dialect development in the first half of the XVII - the first half of the XX century. The study involves the wide range of historical and linguistic materials.
