Abstract. The article is devoted to the various points of view on the notion and essence of pragmatics as well as to the contemporary studies of cross-cultural and intercultural pragmatics. The authors pay special attention to the socio-cognitive perspective and the role of pragmatic competence for successful communication and full mastering of foreign languages. The urgency of considering pragmatics as a functional perspective on any aspects of the language is emphasized.
