MARTIN LUTHER AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE THEORY OF TRANSLATION

Abstract. The article analyzes M. Luther’s contribution to the development of translation science. Analysis of his translation activity shows that translating Bible the German reformer combined communicative and pragmatic principles. M. Luther’s translation theory is analyzed considering the views of the domestic and foreign scientists-translators. The author establishes M. Luther’s leading role in the formation of modern German literary language and the influence of his works on the formation of European written languages. The study emphasizes the importance of M. Luther’s translations for the development of world culture and for the formation of translation theory as a scientific discipline.
