THE PECULIARITIES OF USING USUAL METAPHORS IN ENGLISH (BY THE MATERIAL OF B. OBAMA’S POLITICAL SPEECH)

Abstract. The authors study the peculiarities of usual metaphors functioning in English by the example of Barack Obama’s political speech. Usage is understood as a result of the relationship of linguistic phenomena such as: the effect of deceived expectancy, the semantic amplitude of words, and the metaphorical resonance and distributive power of metaphor. It is proved that these factors are crucial in determining the power of metaphor and allow specifying the notions of occasional and usual metaphorical formations.
