"VOYAGE TO LONDON" ("NIRAT LONDON") BY THAI PRINCE RATCHOTHAI (1819-1867) AS AN EXAMPLE OF NIRAT GENRE MODIFICATION IN THAI LITERATURE

Abstract. The article is devoted to the poem "Voyage to London" ("Nirat London") written by Thai Prince Ratchothai (1819-1867) in the second half of the XIX century. It was the earliest Thai literary work which introduced the new intriguing and incomprehensible foreign world to the inexperienced Siam readers. The paper considers poem’s structural and semantic peculiarities, analyzes author’s descriptions of Great Britain, its internal arrangement, cities, customs, sights, climate, achievements of technical progress. Since "Nirat London" is an example of a new nirat (i.e. the poem which is focused on lyrical hero’s presentation of historical, geographical, ethnographic and other cross-cultural information) the author considered it appropriate to use comparative analysis method in her research.
