Abstract. The article describes the history of the perception of Turgenev’s creativity in China in the first half of the XX century. The author dwells on the translation work of the famous Chinese writer Li Ni (1909-1968). The subject of consideration is Li Ni’s long-term work on the translation of Turgenev’s novels. Particular attention is paid to the translation of the novel "A Nest of Gentlefolk". The article substantiates the reasons for the Chinese writer’s interest to the text, including the question of Li Ni’s self-identification with its main character - with Lavretskii. The relevance of the research lies in the fact that the review introduces a new material for the Russian literary criticism on the history of the reception of Turgenev’s creativity in China.
